Any and all symptoms experienced by a
survivor following a sexual assault are normal.
Many people react to crises differently, and there
is no one “normal” way to react to such a trauma.
Survivors of sexual violence can have numerous
symptoms that can occur at any time after an
assault. The symptoms that are common to survivors
of sexual violence are known as Rape Trauma
Syndrome.
There can be physical, cognitive, and
emotional symptoms of Rape Trauma Syndrome.
Physical symptoms include body soreness, pain,
fatigue, and changes in eating and sleeping
patterns.
Included in cognitive symptoms are
difficulty concentrating and intrusive thoughts and
images of the trauma. More emotional symptoms can
include feelings of guilt, shame, self-blame,
depression, frequent crying, fear, isolation, and
anger, amongst many others.
No matter what a survivor is
experiencing in the aftermath of a sexual trauma, it
is important to remember that each person heals
differently. Often, survivors find it helpful to
talk about their experiences and feelings with
someone they trust. Reaching out for help in the
form of calling a hotline or going to counseling can
make a world of difference.
